Sydney Russell School Year 8 students got a break from their usual lessons when they got the chance to meet a selection of visiting speakers from their local authority. Mr. Sullivan, Director of Student Development explained that the purposes of the day were to give pupils an insight into the workings of the council and some understanding of the important part it plays in their everyday lives. To this end, the year were given an extended assembly by Mrs. Russell, Head of Year 8, and Mr. Sullivan followed by talks from different parts of the council. Speakers included: Parks Police, Barking & Dagenham Youth Forum, Planning, Street Wardens, Road Safety, Environmental Sustainability, Democratic Services and an experienced Councillor. The borough Chief Executive, Robert Whiteman also visited the school to conduct a question and answer session himself. The day was organised with the help of borough advisor, Mr. Erik Stein. He was pleased with the day’s events and hopes to see some of the reflective follow-up work the pupils will be completing as part of their Citizenship studies. The event was further endorsed by Councillor Jeanne Alexander, Executive Member for Children’s Services, “By explaining how local democracy works through fun workshops and question and answer sessions it will hopefully give pupils a better understanding of the Council and encourage them to vote when they’re old enough” Many other secondary schools in Barking & Dagenham will be holding citizenship events of this type following the lead set by Sydney Russell. It was with great pleasure that the students of Sydney Russell School entertained the Mayor and the Chief Executive of Barking and Dagenham on Thursday 29th June. Various organisations from the local community worked with our students to produce a play which addressed anti-social behaviour issues. The group also performed at St Georges Community Centre before an audience which also include Margaret Hodge MP. |

On the 22nd and 23rd June, 30 Year 9 girls were given the opportunity to work with 8 Skin Scientists, Biologists and Marketing Experts to investigate the cosmetics industry. The girls spent time learning about the marketing ploys and ‘bad’ science that coerce us into buying various beauty products and used this information to try and present a more realistic approach. Having spent most of Thursday trying to understand the structure of our skin and how it renews itself they set to their task of designing a new exfoliant, along with all its packaging and advertising in order to provide people with a more scientific approach so they could make educated choices as to whether these products were beneficial. A great time was had by all and our thanks go to the Institute of Education and Planet Science for providing such an interesting project. Miss Welburn - Science Department |

Senior Students Interviews have now taken place to appoint the new TEAM of Senior Students for 2006-2007. We received over 100 applications and were able to fill the all vacancies. The calibre of applicants was extremely high and the appointment decisions were very difficult for staff to make. The new Senior Student list will be published soon. All unsuccessful applicants will placed on a reserve list for next academic year. |
