The meeting was useful for the students in the way that it provided them with an insiders’ view of the workings of the modern political system. “Having access to a sitting MP is a great asset for students studying history and politics courses” explained Mr Sullivan. ”Learning by talking to MPs at the sharp-end of the decision-making process is far more effective than learning from textbooks,” he added. Of particular interest to the sixth-formers were the MP’s comments about the future of Barking and Dagenham and East London in general following the winning of the Olympics for 2012. It would seem that the plans for building and development of new homes and facilities in our area appear to be very encouraging indeed. The meeting finished at the end of the school day with a round of applause for our respected guest and a vote of thanks from the students themselves. |

Following an earlier visit to The Houses of Parliament in January this year, local MP ,John Cruddas came for an extended meeting with Sixth Form History and Government and Politics students on the afternoon of Friday 24th February. He was invited by 6th form student Hollie Ridley who has a high profile in student affairs and has featured in the local press making statements about borough provisions for young people during the past 2 months. A buffet lunch was arranged by Mr Sullivan, the Director of Student development, who also chaired the meeting. Mr Leighton made a brief speech welcoming the Rt. Hon. Member for Dagenham, then John Cruddas explained how he became an MP for our constituency since the 2001 General Election. As a Labour Party MP he won his seat with a large majority of votes. He then explained his work for the people of Dagenham and the ways that he can be contacted. Sixth form students asked him questions on a variety of topics ranging from local issues to the development of the UK constitution and the re-emergence of the Conservatives under the leadership of David Cameron. Mr Cruddas spoke honestly and enthusiastically about local problems relating to crime, law and order. He gave the Sixth Formers an insight into the pressures facing an MP in an area like ours. |

This year’s ski trip was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had a sample of all conditions (sun, snow, sleet, ice, slush) and covered a wide range of slopes and runs which saw everyone make fantastic progress in their skiing and receive a medal and certificate at the end of the week. Skiing by day and swimming, bowling, watching a Tyrolean show, shopping and eating by night - the week flew by! Our group represented the school very well and was complimented by the ski tour company, the instructors and the coach drivers for its enthusiasm. I would like to thank all the students and staff who took part and made it such an enjoyable week. If you would like to join us next year as a beginner or an improver skier, now’s the time to start planning! See Miss Rickard for details. |
