Text Box: During break and lunchtime on Monday 10th October all students at Sydney Russell were given the chance to vote for the candidates of their choice to represent the school at the Barking and Dagenham ( BAD) Youth Forum.
This is a local authority organisation that has been set up to give a voice to the young people of our borough. Elected school and youth organisation representatives meet on a regular basis to discuss matters affecting the young in our area.
Sydney Russell has four representatives on this forum and students over a certain age can nominate themselves to stand for election. Every student in the school is allowed one vote for a male and female candidate.
The Director of Student Development, Mr Sullivan, commented that ‘the election gave our students a valuable lesson in Active Citizenship and I hope it will encourage them to take an interest in local affairs’. Several Sixth form students studying A Level Government & Politics gave assistance to the two officials staffing the playground polling station.
