Text Box: Students at Sydney Russell School got their hands on a new range of gardening tools for the start of a “Growing Club” to be launched in the New Year. As part of the school’s new Healthy School Status, students get the chance to grow flowers and food by helping tend an allotment on the school grounds.
This project is overseen by Ms Ellis of the Science department. She has extensive experience of planting and maintaining plants and hedges across the school site.
With the financial assistance of Barking and Dagenham Primary Care Trust, Ms Ellis was able to purchase a range of gardening tools that were appropriate for use by our students. The intention is to give them a chance to prepare, plant and grow vegetables in order to develop their understanding of healthy food production.
By this, the school hopes to develop further an appreciation and understanding of the importance of eating healthy, natural food.
As well as wearing green blazers as part of the school uniform, our students get the chance to have “green fingers” when it comes to the nurturing of their horticultural skills. Already a group of Year 9 students have cleared the growing area and planted flowers for appreciation in the spring term.
Watch out for further notices of school allotment progress.

Sydney Russell turns a natural shade of green!

Eager students get to grips with the new gardening tools.

On Wednesday 17th January we were lucky enough to be visited by the famous author, Kevin Brooks, who spent an afternoon talking to some Year 10 pupils. Kevin is the author of the darkly funny Martyn Pig, studied by Year 9 students at SRS.  The pupils enjoyed hearing about Kevin’s life and the inspirations for his novels. They were excited to learn that Being, his new work, is to be released in March.  Miss Murray who arranged the visit said, “Kevin was a very entertaining speaker and the pupils really enjoyed their discussions with him.  This was an exciting visit for SRS and it was fantastic for these students to learn more about an author they admire!” Miss Murray
