On Friday 8th December Ms Mc Namee and Ms K. Meggs organised a visit for ten students to travel to London in a limousine free of charge. The students took in the sights of London, for example, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and other historical sites. Unfortunately the group did not have enough time to stop off at Oxford Street for some shopping. Ms Mc Namee intends to organise a similar visit during the summer term .

Travelling in Style

At the end of the Autumn term, Sydney Russell School achieved Healthy Schools Status (HSS).

The status was awarded to our school by national assessors after stringent criteria were met. Staff have had to prepare a detailed dossier and make a number of changes in order to fulfil the different demands laid down by the borough and DfES.  Sydney Russell was only the third  secondary school in the borough to be awarded HSS, a reflection of the determined work put in by students and staff over the last 18 months.

Achieving the status initially means that:

¨ we will be served a healthier selection of food in the canteen. Students will be given the opportunity to contribute to discussions and action to promote healthy eating within the school. A Schools Nutrition Action Group (SNAG)  has been established for this purpose.

¨ P.E at Sydney Russell school maintains its place on the school curriculum as a compulsory activity for all students. There are many out of school hours clubs to join on top of those activities offered on the school’s curriculum.

In order to further develop SRS Healthy School status the School Council will  continue to meet on a regular basis to discuss issues in order to improve our school. Students can also e-mail their thoughts, concerns and suggestions via the on-line Student Voice.

Less noticeable, but having an impact in the long run, are changes to school policies concerning bullying, child protection, food, sex and relationship education and drugs education. These policies have all been updated, approved by school governors and implemented this year.

The school will provide advice about attaining a balance between healthy eating and regular exercise via the schools newsletter and Healthy School Website.  This on-line innovation will be accessible later this term.

Sydney Russell has also set up a School Transport Plan (STP)  steering committee to encourage students, parents and staff to seek alternative, healthier modes of transport to and from school.  Later this year we hope to have designated cycle lanes on the road outside school and secure storage sheds for bicycles on-site.

We will be asking parents and students for their opinion about healthy issues in the coming months.

A  new year brings changes and a resolution to get ‘Fit and Healthy’.  Sydney Russell wishes all staff, students and parents a healthier 2007.
