This has been a fantastic year for students, staff and parents at Sydney Russell with major successes to celebrate on the exam results front.

GCSE results (5 or more A*-C grades) leapt from 45%  in 2005 to 50% this summer. No Year 11 student left without a GCSE qualification,  it was a 100% success rate. A’ Level students achieved an incredible 98% pass rate!

Headteacher Roger Leighton commented:

“These results are a tribute to the hard work and commitment of staff, students, parents and Governors. We have been putting in place huge changes at Sydney Russell over the last few years but it takes time for these to come through in terms of exam results—we are now seeing the impact of these changes starting to show. This is only the start—we are now aiming for 70%+ at GCSE within the next two to three years—which will put us on par with the top three schools in the Borough”.

We are now working hard with our current examination cohort to maximise their achievement and build upon our successes.

The Sydney Russell school is seeking International School Status this year and we have already made strong links with a school in Georgia, USA. Students can look forward to exciting opportunities including collaborative project work with other students from across the globe.

The second week back after the Summer Holidays saw the launch of our international work which introduced topics of a global nature to students in all curriculum areas. Students enjoyed a wide range of activities and experiences that were arranged to explore different cultures and countries from around the world. Lunch had a different theme each day with food from around the world on the menu.

Our student population comes from many different ethnic backgrounds and we drew on their unique cultures as we moved through the week. We are very proud of the diversity of our school community and we feel that Sydney Russell is ‘where the world comes to school’.

International week was really exciting  but it is only the beginning.
