A melting pot of culture shone from the school stage as rapturous whooping and applause rang out in celebration of diversity.

Nigeria, Lebanon and Lithuania were just some of the countries and cultures celebrated during the international day of culture.

The first of what is hoped to be an annual event, was organised by our students to promote an awareness of all the cultures at our school.

Our rich diversity means that 65 different countries are represented by students, comprising 60 languages.

A 90 minute show formed the centrepiece of events, with a mixture of performances involving dance, drama, fashion and music.

The Turkish dancers proved to be a big hit, while Indian and Lithuanian  dancers also made an impact. One of the biggest cheers from the hundreds strong audience was reserved for the four-pieced band Valours.

Sydney Russell School is the only school in  Barking and Dagenham to have been awarded an International School Award.

The award is run by the British Council to recognise schools that have raised the profile in internationalism.

Deputy Headteacher, Mr Hancock said: “We are very proud of this award. We are the only school in the borough to be given it. Promoting our differences is very

important and that is why we hold events like this.”

As the throng of students left at the end of the event one said: “It was really good fun. Lots of things were going on. It shows how varied and different we all are.”

Many thanks go to Miss Ade for organising the event which she hopes to do again next year.
