University of Kent Trip Report By Greg Patten Year 12 |
|
As we were being led around the campus most people took note of the brilliant facilities and magnificent view of Canterbury Cathedral that the university boasted, however a few girls decided that they would judge the university by keeping a tally on the amount of good looking undergraduates that walked by! At the end of our tour we took a seat in a lecture room which was well laid out and well equipped. The lecturer was the classic stereotype of a scientist; balding, bearded, scruffy and with eyebrows to match. He gained our attention with a mock gunfight, which made some of the year 12’s jump (literally in one or two cases). What followed was a very interesting discussion on the faults of the judiciary system and the applications of forensics. The second lecture was titled Cool Physics. It focused on what happens when certain things are cooled using liquid nitrogen. The most memorable part of the lecture involved making ice cream. Despite the better judgement of Teachers telling us that nitrogen ice cream can lead to upset stomach it was really sugary and too good to say no to! Overall, the Kent University trip was an enjoyable day with engaging lectures and brilliant scenery on campus. At the end everyone received goody bags with a prospectus, pencils and good memories of the day’s events. This trip was sponsored by Aim Higher. |

SRS STUDENTS GET IN THE FESTIVE GIVING SPIRIT Sydney Russell students have generously filled over 80 shoe box parcels with gifts for less fortunate children around the world this Christmas. Students from Years 7, 8 & 9 took part in the initiative as part of the Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ Appeal. Students chose the gender and age of the children they would like to give a gift to and filled their shoe boxes with useful and fun items such as toys, sweets and toothbrushes! Just a few of the many countries the parcels will be going to include Mozambique, Armenia and Romania. The parcels will be delivered to Dagenham Motors who are collating the packages for the project locally. |

SRS HOSTS School Hosts Borough Urban Question Time. On Tuesday, 25th November Sydney Russell School hosted the borough event, “Urban Question Time” in our Main Hall. The ‘Urban Question Time’ initiative follows the same format as the popular BBC T.V. current affairs show in the sense that the audience gets the choice to ask questions on current affairs to a panel of experts. A dozen Year 11 students from our school grilled the experts during a lively 90 minute session. They were joined by staff and students from St Vincent’s Primary, Grafton & Dorothy Barley Juniors as well as St Theresa’s schools. Kevin Donovan, Barking & Dagenham Child Voice Co-ordinator thanked the school for hosting the session and appreciated the buffet laid on by our catering staff when the event ended. The school hopes to raise its profile in the community by staging other events like this in the New Year. Mr Sullivan, Director of Student Development. |
