The end of last term saw Year 4 students from Roding Primary come over to Sydney Russell for a digital photography workshop.  Pupils worked with a photographer on photography skills and then went over to Parsloes Park to put into practice what they had learnt.  They later came back to school to work on a publicity poster using the ICT facilities in Durrant.

The sessions went really well with one student saying “the things I liked were the computers and cameras as it made me feel a little grown-up and so did the teachers.”

The workshops are part of a community project entitled ‘Beauty in an Urban Area’. The school is working with various community groups in separate workshops on the basic skills involved in taking digital photographs on the theme of different people’s perception of ‘Beauty in an Urban Area’.  The photographs taken throughout the project will be displayed in an exhibition later in the year.

PRIMARY STUDENTS GET SNAPPY IN THE PARK!!

Our thriving sixth form continues to make a positive contribution to school life. Student leaders assist staff in the running of the sixth form common room and they act as ambassadors for 16+ and the school. Their role is quite varied and includes: Attending parents events, contributing to  Year 11 subject fair and speaking with Year 11 students regarding all things 16+. They also run weekly committee meetings to empower 16+ students, making  positive changes, planning trips and running charity events.

Late January 2009 saw over one hundred Year 10 students widening their horizons, flexing their intellectual muscles and showing their academic ambition with two immensely successful visits to The University of East London.

The action packed days were filled with activities designed to inform and inspire Sydney Russell’s own potential future undergraduates with an array of activities ranging from Business Degree taster sessions to a thorough tour of the campus conducted by current students. The day offered our students an insight into university life- a path that I am sure unprecedented numbers of them are set to take in the future. All of The Year Ten Team extend their warm thanks to Ms Neave’s exhaustive preparation and organisation.
