Text Box: A delegation of students from the newly formed Sydney Russell Student Leadership Team had the opportunity to represent the school and our country in Milan 7th-9th May 2009. The students spent 3 days in the Italian city and took part in a range of activities. The visit was organised by CESES and the European Parliament in Brussels. Lindsey Jones, Jack McGinley and Tommie Wiltshire acted as ambassadors for Sydney Russell at this unique, prestigious event. The group was accompanied by Miss Hargreaves and Mr Lockwood.
On arrival in Milan, we met some of the other delegations, 23 in total, from all over Europe. We were able to make links with other European partners which we hope to pursue in the future development of Sydney Russell’s International School Status, not least with our twin Italian School in Paderno. We were warmly welcomed by our twin school, Scuola Media Allende-Croci, where we spent the day sharing good practice and experiencing school life in Italy. Our partner school showed us the new town library which is an innovative, new project in culture. The library, previously a textile factory, was beautifully designed and provides the town with a meeting place and an opportunity to take out books, music and films. We also had the opportunity to meet the Mayor and our students asked him questions about local democracy.
All European delegates attended the Bertelli Institute where students from all 23 European countries took part in a conference on Active European Citizenship. Before returning to Sydney Russell, the group attended the Teatro del Verme in central Milan for the 9th May European Day celebration to celebrate over 60 years of peace in Europe, as well as our European and individual identities.
