New Cycle Facility Opens
|
|
Attention potential Sydney Russell Cyclists! Our school now has a secure cycle facility which can hold up to 60 cycles. Each year group has initially been allocated 10 places for students who want to cycle to and from school. Priority is given to those who live further away, wear a cycle helmet and have, or are willing to take a cycle-training course. Each cyclist is given a contract outlining the terms and conditions of use, they also have a pass as proof of access to the cycle facility. The cycle sheds are only accessible for those with a bike at the start and end of the school day. They are locked during lessons. Mr. Sullivan
What to do if you want a place to lock your cycle: 1, Give your name to your year head or form tutor. 2, If you are accepted you will be given a contract for you and your parents to sign and then be issued with a pass to the cycle shed.
Mr Leighton [Head teacher and amateur cyclist] says, “Don’t despair, don’t delay – Apply for a bike shed place right away!”

2008 was another great year for students, staff and parents at Sydney Russell, with exam results maintaining the massive improvements of the year before. GCSE results (5 or more A*-C grades) which leapt from 50% in 2006 to over 60% in 2007, remained firmly above the national average at 63%. For the third year in a row, no Year 11 student left without a GCSE qualification—a 100% success rate. In the Sixth Form, the proportion of A’Level passes at the highest three grades (A-C) rose from 48% in 2007 to 61% this year. Headteacher Roger Leighton commented: “These results confirm our place amongst the top performing borough schools and are a tribute to the hard work and commitment of staff, students, parents and governors. They reflect the fact that Sydney Russell is a superbly equipped and well disciplined school with high quality teachers and support staff.” Together Everyone Achieves More |

International School Award |
|
Sydney Russell School is the only school in the borough to have been granted the prestigious DCFS International School Award. The Award was started in 1999 to recognise the schools leading the way by instilling a global dimension to the learning experience of all children and young people. It is funded by the DCSF and managed by the British Council. |

John Rolfe from the British Council wrote: ‘Many congratulations on your fantastic and very well deserved success in the 2008 International School Awards…you are one of the best schools in the country in your commitment to ensuring that all our young people develop as global citizens and the ethos in your school celebrates and recognises the importance of the international dimension in education’
