Sydney Russell again launched the annual ‘Week of Peace’ this September. This week of high profile events is organised by communities, individuals, and public agencies to promote greater community cohesion, safety and peace across the capital. The opening ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, students and staff. Students contributed to the event by performing a number of acts around the central themes of the week. The Ceremony concluded with the release of 14 doves representing the 14 borough wards. The school also organised a number of special events throughout the week, including the screening of ’Anti Knife Crime’ film made by the Barking and Dagenham Youth Forum and the signing of a peace pledge. |

2009 was another great year for students, staff and parents at Sydney Russell, with the school’s best ever exam results placing them firmly in the ‘top four’ of the Borough school league table, at both GCSE and A’Level. GCSE results (5 or more A*-C grades) leapt from 65% in 2008 to 81% in 2009, significantly above the national average. GCSE including English and Maths (5 or more A*-C grades) went up from 33% to 44%. For the fourth year in a row, no Year 11 student left without a GCSE qualification—a 100% success rate. In the Sixth Form, the A’Level pass rate went up from 96% to 99%. Headteacher Roger Leighton commented: “These results confirm our place amongst the top performing borough schools and are a tribute to the hard work and commitment of staff, students, parents and governors. They reflect the fact that Sydney Russell is a superbly equipped and well disciplined school with high quality teachers and support staff.” Together Everyone Achieves More |

Important Message for Parents |
|
We would like to remind everyone NOT to come onto school premises to drop off or collect students in their cars. The front gate and playground are very busy areas both before and after school. The dropping-off and collection of students should be outside of the school premises. |
